3.)Router Placement
◄Walls, metal objects, other electrical devices can block radio signals.  ◄Sometimes a slight change in router location makes a big difference.
◄Start in the center of your home/office ◄ Use a diagnostic tool to measure your signal quality.
4.)Security Measures
◄Harden your defenses:
◄Change the Administrator Name and Password of the router.
◄Hide your SSID
◄Encrypt with WPA2 & limit who get the passphrase    ◄Subnet and use "Guest" Networks (if available on your equipment)                ◄Employ MAC filtering
◄Use Your Firewall

5.)Connecting Devices
◄If all is done correctly, you should be able to access the internet - fast & easy.
◄Most devices ask for your networks unique name (SSID) and the passphrase you set up inside the router for the WPA2 encryption.
◄Bada- bing!            Or Yahoo, or google.  For privacy advocates try: DuckDuckGo

Long story short, get a high speed internet connection.  Buy or lease your modems and wireless routers. Pick the best spot possible depending on your buildings layout and the needs of your users. Boot up the routers and apply all the security settings you can muster.  Connect your devices.

Short story long, when you need help - or just don't have the time - call us.  We can do most configurations remotely - provided you have a stable internet connection and a working computer. If you need us to do it all - that's fine too.  The goal is to connect you to the world!

What about Wi-Fi Hotspots?

Picture
◄With Wi-Fi Hotspots - you gain quick and easy access to the internet with your mobile computing devices away from home via a connection hosted by someone else - usually a business.
◄The primary method of connecting for traditional Wi-Fi involves a wireless router that your device connects to.
◄Our major ISP's† provide some Wi-Fi Hotspot locations that are "free/included" in subscriber plans. Cox & Time Warner have limited investment in the San Diego. Currently, AT&T seems to have the most coverage.
◄The Mobile phone providers available in San Diego offer various forms of W-Fi coverage. It's a mix of Wi-Fi tethering, traditional & mesh Wi-Fi, & celluar data plan use. Bear in mind that the "high speed" data that powers your Mobile devices through Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, & AT&T (the contract clubs) via your 3G &4G subscription plan is not the same as actual Wi-Fi. The costs, quality, & security are different.
◄Compare the availability of Wi-Fi Hotspots in San Diego from each of the Major ISP's and Mobile phone companies to that of Austin, TX. There is a LARGE gap. San Diego doesn't compare to most major cities in California,  @ least in terms of Wi-Fi offered by the service providers.
◄For alternatives, look at boingo.com or freedompop.com for low & no cost wireless internet. Look at boingos locator map for San Diego - nearly 2000 hotspots listed! You'll see a mix of corporate and non-corporate maintained Wi-Fi.
◄As long as you understand that the security of your connection with such services is not in your control - Hotspotting can be very useful.

◄San Diego has many "hot-spots" to enjoy.  Click the FREE WiFi INSIDE icon for a sampling* of easy to find  Wi-Fi internet connections and really great places to visit!  (* Thanks to The San Diego Tourism Authority)
